Storage Conditions

Temperature: Storing THRIVE at a high temperature can significantly increase the speed that calories and vitamins will degrade over time. In the correct storage container, low-moisture foods such as THRIVE can be stored at room temperature or cooler (75 degrees Fahrenheit or lower) and remain nutritious and edible for years. Our stated shelf life assumes that the product will be stored in optimal conditions.

Humidity: The effects of humidity on a closed can are caused by heat and very similar to the effects of high temperature (see above). High humidity can corrode the cans and in some cases even cause the cans to leak. Areas with high humidity can reduce the opened shelf life of the product. As humidity varies with location please use your own discretion to prevent possible sickness from eating spoiled food.

Damaged Container: Minor dents in the center of the can are usually just a cosmetic issue. However, a can that has been dented near or on a seam can have a compromised air-tight seal and allow oxygen to enter the can. If this is the case we recommend using the dented can within the specified opened shelf life, rather than closed.

The best way to maintain the highest quality of your THRIVE products is to take care of them. If you intend on storing your food for the sealed shelf life, store the cans in a place that is not open to elements such as water, light, and air. Take care of it. Don't expose it unnecessarily to the elements. Also, be sure to keep the temperature and humidity low and even. Under these proper storing situations your THRIVE will maintain its delicious taste, natural coloring, and proper nutrients.

  1. Excellent!

I cook this cereal in my rice cooker, as I would white rice. Toss in some blueberries and banana near the end of cooking time, mash everything up, sprinkle with cinnamon and drizzle agave nectar. Excellent! (I usually don't care for hot grain cereals, but this is quite good!)

  2. Great quality

My husband is very picky about his 9-grain cereal as he eats it raw on his cold cereal. For years, we have gotten ours from a particular store 4 hrs away. Not any more.... He was pleased with this Thrive product saying it was ever bit as good as what we normally get. I cooked mine per the directions on the can and loved the flavor and texture! Great hot cereal option.

  3. Love it!

I love to make this for my family for breakfast! Here is what I came up with because I like recipes.
    4 cups water
    1 1/2 cups 9 Grain Cereal
Bring to boil. Turn down heat and simmer for 10 min.
-Add an extra 1/2 cup of water if you'd like to add Freeze Dried berries. Add the berries the last 1 min. of cooking.
-Serve in a bowl with 1 tsp of honey and milk
    Delicious!!!!!

  6. Great flavor!!

I grew up eating cracked red wheat for breakfast but this is a special treat since there are different types of wheat to take it to the next level! I rarely measure my water so I just guess the amount of cereal to add and then stir in some quick cook oats at the end to thicken it. I make extra and have a fast breakfast the next day. I love this cereal!

  7. Side Dish

I am experimenting with the 9 grain cereal as a side dish. I use a 1:1 ratio of water and cereal. I pour very hot water (or bouillon) on the cereal and let it set for about 20 minutes or so. Then I saute veggies (onion, spinach, celery,...), garlic, salt and pepper and red chili pepper. After they are sauteed, I add the cereal to the pan and heat through. A little cheese to top if off. It makes a great, filling side dish (think tabouleh) You could even add chopped chicken and make it a filling main dish. I like the fact that I can make this tasty dish in minutes with very little energy use in case of a power failure.

  8. Great for making bread, not just for cereal!

I love using this 9 grain cereal in my multi grain bread. The recipe calls for about 13 cups of whole wheat flour, 1 cup of multi grain cereal, and 1/4 cup of sunflower seeds. The bread is so delicious!

  10. Love it

I put mine in milk and then into the microwave for about 1 and half minutes...let it set for a few minutes, then add honey and cinnamon... I just love it... I sent a #10 can to my mom to start her on her food storage too! Hubby tells me I have to save some for storage for us too... well I may just have to order another case for that! Thanks Shelf Reliance for making it affordable to buy and stock up! ((Sharon))

  11. It's not my favorite, but ...

In a survival situation, I'd eat it. I think I'll keep the pantry-size cans on hand instead of the #10 cans. I like whole grain cereals, but this is a little too much at one time. Hopefully my opinion of this will change as I get to know the different textures and flavors of the individual grains themselves; but until then, I'll stick with the oatmeal and germade.

  12. Awesome

I can't stand the texture of similar store bought products, but love Thrive Cracked Cereal. I really love to mix a few tablespoons in with my oatmeal before I cook it, or sprinkle a bit on top of my muffins before baking them.

  13. Not my favorite

This is almost a "Cream of Wheat", oatmeal or something like that (which I hate.) Would rather eat good ole grits more than that. Sorry, was not what I was expecting. (My stupidity I know) Even tried it with sugar one time and then with honey another time. Not going to be ordering this one, but that is because I would prefer something else for breakfast not because this was necessarily bad.

My wife said they were "ok", but she is not a big fan of grain "cereals" either.

Speaking of grits. Don't have those do you? (hint hint, nudge nudge)

  14. Yummy!!

I don't care for the traditional farina cereals but this was delicious!! My 4 year old and I tried it out the day it came in and both wanted more!! 1/4 cup cereal with 1 cup water worked best!

  15. Excellent

My husband, my two-year-old son and I all love this cereal. Unlike leftover oatmeal, if you accidentally make too much, it is edible and in fact tasty the next day. I like it best with fresh sliced strawberries, milk and honey. It has a nice texture, but if you cook it long enough it can be very soft instead of a bit chewy.

  16. "Sticks to your ribs"

Like another reviewer said, I cooked it on the stove for a few minutes before eating it. The texture reminded me of Malt-O-Meal and it tasted great. I did add milk and cinnamon and sugar to it, though. My husband and our 3-year-old daughter also liked it. I was also happy that it "stuck to my ribs" and I didn't feel hungry for a couple of hours.

  17. Wonderfully healthy!

Really impressed with this cracked grain cereal! Very healthy and delicious!

The directions on the can say to just pour milk over it, but it should also say to cook it first. I add it to boiling water and simmer for about 10 min. on the stove until the grain has a softer texture, then add milk, cinnamon/sugar and freeze-dried fruit. So good!
